Umukarikari / Umukarikari
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:56:21 AM »
Track start is well sign posted from Kaimanawa rd via rough metal roads.  Steady climb to exposed ridgeline.  Excellent views, forest & ird song to be experienced. 2.5hrs in I came across the Umukarikari & the new Urchin Track interestion.   Doc signs says 3-4hrs back to carpark, Urchin Tops 2.5-3hrs & 4.5-6hrs to Urchin carpark.  From here in snow it was just a short tramp to sharp cone and then then the peak.  Very exposed now visability due to white out and very cold so please dress for alpine if winter.  Dropped back to interection for the Urchin track see next post.

Baldy, Mt / Mt Baldy from Te Aroha

From Te Aroha side please dont make the same mistakes I did.
From the carpark off Wairakau Rd walk about 10min up a metal logging access road a green metal sign will indicate Tuahu track left through the pines and Killarney lakes track continues right.  Dont turn through the pines as the track has been destroyed by forest work, continue up metal track past the Waihou Forest sign to the 1st main access turnoff on the left.  A large orange marker was on a post there.  Cross the stream and continue until you hit a access rd interestion, turn left.  A sign saying Miro Rd will be on the right track visable at this point, dont take this one like I did.  Continue on metal rd left over another stream crossing and a white Tuahu Track sign will mark another interection, turn right and enjoy the tramp to Mt Baldy.  Consequently I discovered all this on my return from trying to find the above, Ill be back a little more informed and less frustrated.  Hope this proves helpful.

Car park just past Seales Rd from Pyes Pa if using a car GPS.  A pretty and delightful walk, great for young kids, had been raining all night but the track was dry with leaves underfoot.  There has been car break in problems so locals do a voluntary car watch but still take caution.  23min brisk walk up taking the ridge track to trig RHS at the loop intersection and 18min jog down via 40m high Kahikatea tree return loop track.  Awesome views from the platform and some grand old trees to admire both up and down.

This was our 3rd peak for the day so was getting dark.  Carpark located 400m past Pukehehangi Rd intersection on the Paradise Valley Rd.  Take and stay on the Jubilee track, stay straight at Nature walk interestion and complete the walk via Mountain Rd to summit.  No Trig to be found or any views.  Easy to Moderate fitness required, well formed track, not a recommended walk for anything other than a solid workout, no views and only a 40m Rata of interest to look at.  37Min brisk walk up, 25Min slow jog down in the dark.

Whakapoungakau / Mt Whakapoungakau
« on: May 23, 2011, 02:51:21 PM »
Carpark located at education centre about half way along Lake Okataina (which is worth a look too).  Track starts through information pavillion and walk straight ahead, dont turn off this track until the 1st main junction and turn right (stay right always and you will be fine).  There is an amazing old tree stump just before the Whakapoungakau junction that is worth a photo. Turn right at juction to the summit that has 360deg views if you get elevated.  1Hr15Min up & 45Min down.  Part of the NZ walkway trail so is very well formed and excellent underfoot.  Moderate fitness recommended but well worth the effort.
