1  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Rangitoto / Big day out on Rangitoto Date: April 08, 2013, 04:00:53 AM
Arrived on 1st ferry & left on the last, with a big day of walking & caching our way around the island & up to the summit. Might only be a small hill but, with 27km on our GPS, we had tired legs by the end  ;D

A beautiful day for a walk, so thought I'd explore this peak for the 1st time. The info provided in the peak bagging description is spot-on: found Scotsman gully track & then up the summit track, taking the shortcut track with plenty of calf burn. This route may not being officially maintained but thankfully someone has dealt to the gorse.;D I'm slower than most who log on & was surprised to reach the summit in under 55 mins. That said, the shortcut track was hard-packed after the recent dry spell; can imagine it's not such easy going when wet. Awesome views along the track & from the summit, a great walk.
3  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Maungatautari / Maungatautari Date: November 07, 2012, 11:42:10 AM
Bagged Maungatautari for the 1st time in Feb 2012, back again on Nov 4th 2012 to follow one of the pest monitoring trails over to Hook Nose outcrop. Started from Hicks Rd, across farm paddocks to the predator proof fence & through the gate to "OTM/Old Mountain Track" (ie use the gate 50 m to the right of the 1st more obvious gate) OTM track had minimal mud after the recent dry spell and didn't take long to reach the Rahiri Rd track/trail off to the right just before the summit. Overgrown but reasonably obvious route for a bait trail, marked with pink and orange triangles, plus additional orange tape markers indicating how best to get around fallen trees. Needed a bit of care though not to wander off along intersecting bait trails. Rewarded with great views from the lookout on a clear, late spring day, before scrambling back up to the summit.
4  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Ngongotaha, Mt / Ngongotaha Date: November 07, 2012, 11:26:31 AM
Parked on Paradise Valley Rd & followed the well-formed Jubilee track up to Mountain Rd & then along the seal for the last couple of hundred metres to the summit. Jogged back down again & back at the car in ~ 90 mins total, including stopping at the rata & a minor detour to the only viewing point I could find - a short un-marked path by one of the Jubilee track/Nature Walk intersections. Nice to stretch the legs

Great views, always love coming up here. Took the easy longer route today, with steep tracks closed because of slips from recent heavy rain.
