Hi, I'm Margaret, I do a lot of tramping and love getting up to the summits of hills and mountains and enjoying the views. My favourite places are Mt Hikurangi, Lake Waikaremoana and Tongariro National Park.

General Discussion / Arowhana
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:12:54 AM »
I was wondering if Arowhana could be added to the 'possibles' list. It's a rugged little stand-alone peak [1440m] on the Eastern edge of the Raukumara Range in the NE of the NI. The Mata River, Waipaoa River and a tributary of the Motu River all have their sources on it's slopes. It's a 2hr drive from Gisborne via the Mangatu Forest and has sub-alpine vegetation growing on it. It's a steady climb up to the large, flat top where there are a number of communication towers. There are great views of the hinterland of Gisborne and on a fine day views out to the Bay of Plenty.
It also features in the Maori legend of Rongokako  [Te Tapuwae o Rongokako].
A great day trip. Map Y16 Tauwhareparae.
