The climb up started off reasonably difficulty and didn't get any easier!! There was a bit of a view at the first lookout (between the clouds). The bush was scenic which made up for the fact the track was very challenging. Climbing up the rocks and tree roots was hard but fun. There wasn't much of a view at the top due to low cloud. Climb took 1 hr 40 for Mum and I. Dad and Cameron were only 5 minutes behind. Caitlin took about 2 hrs 15, and the rest took 2 1/2 hours. We all decided to take the road down as the track would have been horrible to try and attempt to clamber/slide/trip/stumble/slip/fall down.
We were all proud of our achievement and enjoyed the hot pools to soak our muscles.=-)

The track starts off in new bush planted on farmland, with lots of grassland birds. After about 10 minutes we went into the bush and the incline rate didn't get any less!!! There were lots of very steep steps, roots and banks to clamber up and over - there was even a chain at one point to help you pull yourself up. There were a few slippery clay parts which would be hazardous in the wet - luckily there hadn't been rain for quite some time.
When you get to the top there is a massive trig tower/viewing platform with great views all around. A pretty sweet-as walk bro!!!

The track starts off walking up some steep paddocks, complete with cows, and when you get into the bush, it doesn't get any less steep!!! There were lots of big steps to scramble up, rocks to squeeze around, and trenches to shuffle through. The last third of the walk was a bit more level, and the view at the top was stunning. We were lucky enough to see a helicopter flying metres above our heads - what a lazy way to get to the top for the view. 1 hr 8 to summit, 55 minutes coming down. Overall a very :) walk!

General Discussion / Taupiri Fire Lookout - Whirinaki

Despite getting prior instructions from DoC to find the track, we got rather lost finding the road at the start of the walk, and then realised there must have once been a sign on the top of a post at one of the intersections. We then walked up the road and all 11 of us missed the sign for the walking track to the Fire Lookout, only seeing it on the return journey - some serious overgrowth there!
However, it was all worth it as the view from the top was spectacular!! We could see Tauhara, Ruapehu, Edgecumbe, Pirongia etc. It was also great getting up into the Fire Lookout.
Definately one to revisit on future visits to Whirinaki.

Quite a short walk to the top but nice bush. Fantastic viewing platform but was a bit cloudy for us to see inland. The track was in great condition.
We then did the walk over the other side of the road to the waterfall where my Dad, brother and I braved a quick swim and then had a picnic lunch on the rocks. I think you need to both walks to make the drive worthwhile.

Started at Okataina Outdoor Education area. Took 1 hour 10 to trig turn off then further 25 mins to trig. Total climbing to trig 441m, and for return trip, 555m. 55mins from junction back to car.
Biggest, fattest tuis ever at the first junction. Awesome gnarly tree (see photo) just before trig turnoff. Awesome views at summit and a great place for our picnic lunch.
Overall a fantastic walk. 9.9/10

A very well maintained track twisting its way up through the native bush to the summit, but not very rewarding with the only view being a whopping great trasmitting tower  >:(

The track was in very good condition and the scenery was great - especially as we got above the fog, but below the cloud. Not the greatest track to do in wet conditions, with patches of slippery clay :o
Summit 741m. Climbed 388 in 1hr 15mins, 50mins down, total climb 425m. The thermal lake was beautiful but we couldn't see all of it due to the fog! :-\
