Walked the circuit from Waharau regional park. Disturbed a family of pigs on the way down or should i say blundered into the group and was lucky i wasnt standing between the sow and her young it was chaos.

This is really for more experienced trampers the Ruahines are changeable at best and high winds can be present on a good day. the approaches are steep and shale so very interesting in a white out and not for the faint hearted in strong wind but well worth the walk as a loop track as described in north island weekend tramps. The track from Waipawa Saddle is a route marked by the odd stone carn.

Kaimai Mamaku Forest park. Access from thompsons track road just south of Katikati can be done as part of a two day circuit up Thompsons track to the top of the range and the North south track then past Motutapere staying at Motutapere hut or as a quick 2.5 hour return trip from the carpark. Has some views over Tauranga but its main attraction is the old Eliza gold mine which borrows into the hillside about half way up.

Very fortunate with this one. An overcast day up to syme hut then climbed taranaki the next morning in brilliantly clear skies. was feeling so good that on the way down detoured around lake dive and came back through the gorges. this however was a mistake as the gorges was like spending 4 hrs on a stepping machine and couldnt walk properly for a week after.

I grew up on Belmont Flat during the Fifties and Sixties and this was our play ground before Kelson even Existed. This is a great place to lie and cloud watch on a summers day or star gaze on a crisp autumn evening. An even better place to battle the elements in a howling southerly. you havent lived until youve braced a good storm anchored by the rocks on boulder hill. This is the place that built the wonderlust for adventure and the need to know what lay beyond the next hill and ridge.
