General Discussion / Karangahake Gorge Summit
« on: November 28, 2009, 12:14:13 PM »
This is a nice walk with nice views. Took us around 1 hour to get to the top and 50mins to get back down. We parked at the carpark at the end of Crown Hill Road. Follow the old
road which will take you to the Karangahake Mountain Track, Turn right onto the mountain
track. As you walk up there is short way to the top of the summit. This track takes off on your left and whilst it is steeper it is a shorter way to get to the top and has a lot better views.

We finished off by fishing for trouts after the walk down in the gorge.

:) We started the walk today at around 6pm hoping to get to the top have packed dinner and be back before it got dark. The walk is reasonably easy with some muddy parts. The hardest part we found was walking through the knee length farmland. It took us 45mins to get to the top and 40 minutes to get back down. So if you reasonably fit don't be fooled by the sign which says 2 hours to the summit. Worthwhile doing the walk with all the views it presents.  :)

We took the Tirohanga Track off Corcoran to the summit.
The track climbs steeply to the Ruapane lookout then on to Tirohanga Peak before reaching the Pirongia summit. The track to Ruapane is well defined from there on the track becomes alot more technical with some steep sections involving climbing through tree roots, climbing rocks using chains.  All worth it once you reach the top, there is a viewing platfom with amazing 360 deg views.

A nice walk through native bush. Took us 50mins to get to the top and arond 20 minutes to back to the bottom (running)  :)with a fallen tree to cross. You could easily do this track with your running shoes. Not a lot to view at the top but a nice walk worth doing especially if you are venturing out into tramping. Its short drive from Rotorua city to get to 40 Paradise Valley Road. Walk through a couple of gates and you will walk past the toilets on your left before getting onto the track.

The track was wet and muddy. Took us about an hour to get to the peak but longer to get down the slippery track! It was worth the effort as the bushes out there are quite different with mushrooms growing on trees, and lots Pungas. We would recommend taking your walking sticks to assist coming down hill and avoid any slips!
