I can also supply how to twist your ankle till you hear a loud cracking/snapping noise (followed by a few profane words) then realise you are halfway into the Hunua ranges with no other way out other than shanks pony ..
Still hobbling 2 weeks on, next time I am gong to lookwhere I am going hahaha

It was a crazy and long day vinodrinker .. I agree with pmcke better to do Ngauruhoe in the dark so you don't see where youre walking .. from my recollections of when I last did it it was two steps up 1.5 back down again  :)

Mangatangi / Re: Mangatangi Trig ex Kaiaua Road via Vinings track
« on: July 09, 2008, 06:28:28 AM »
Just an additional note to Vinodrinker's  most of the track from the farmland to the ridge track is dry and moss covered, the first 500 meters from the stile is fairly steep but does ease off. Does not appear to be a well walked track however it is still very pleasant. Once o the main Mangatangi track it does beome somewhat softer underfoot.
We should of taken a photo of the last sign post to the trig .. 'Mangatangi Trig 2 min' somewhat amusing after you have been walking for 2 hours or so.

Suggestion when leaving go to Kaiaua grab a feed at the fish and chip shop.

Not sure, maybe in a couple of years .. Taranaki is a real mountain man's climb somewhat different to Mt William or the Clevedon Scenic reserve.

Pinnacles, The / Re: Bagged it..........This was my climb number 1

Then the final steep push to the pinnacles summit (752m asl?) which rewards with great views across to table mountain and Pauanui. (anyone - can you still climb table mountain??? I heard the track was closeed years ago as it was just insanely boggy)

5 hours all up for us.
I just love the view of the back of my head Craig ...

Actually had a similar experience with the Tongariro crossing nice board walk, red carpet the works, can understand the need for the boardwalk when we went over approximately 500 followed us that day alone. To be honest it was refreshing to see that DOC have taken such steps to ensure that the enviroment in which we walk is preserved. Not sure if DOC have stats on park use but The Pinnacles has to be fairly heavily used ..

Funniest thing happened on our return journey we met this middle aged couple, whose first comment was how thy hated the well formed steps and board walk and that they don't have such things in the UK, I found this somewhat amusing and only wish I had my wits about me to mention the train going up Mt Snowdon.
Those of you wishing to peruse this amazing 'feature' of mountain climbing  ;D
