Title: Mt Te Aroha ex Te Aroha visitors centre
Post by: vinodrinker on May 25, 2008, 01:41:52 AM
The start of the track can be a little difficult to find so ask att he visitors centre but basicaly head up the park from the centre to the hot springs.  The track is just beyond this to the left.

This was our first serious peak and we werent too fit but I remember it being a relentless climb, up all the way with no merciful flat or down sections.  The track isnt too bad but is rough in places.

There is one lookout about quarter the way up overlooking Te Aroha township and then a grim slog upward to the transmittor station at the top.  We had a perfectly clear day and the views at the summit (952m asl) were just spectacular across to Mt Maunganui, Mayor Island, up the coromandel ranges, Thames, across to the Hunuas and even Mt Piongia in the distance.

Very much worthwhile.  The round trip including a good stop at the top was 5 hours.

Yes that is a great pic - it's going to make its way on to the main Te Aroha page shortly.
