A bit of secret training on my way down south to have a go at something a little bigger down there. As it was a bit of a last minute whim, I set off from Otaki Forks and returned the same way. The track is a superhighway for a while, with a few patches of mud through the middle section. Once you get out onto the tops, it's pure pleasure. Of course I was faced with the inevitable clag I'd heard so much about, but was pleasantly surprised to find the clouds cleared just as I approached the summit. It took me 3 hours each way, with a total ascent of 2000m. Quite a nice peak for my very first step into the Tararua's.
