OmaGosh bags Karangahake with GuanoGerbil

A rare fine weekend day, so put it to good use. We took the extra shortcut on offer by parking the car over the other side of the river at the end of the lower Crown Hill Rd. It saved the walk up from the river and there's a nice kauri grove walk here right at the carpark as well.
An easy stroll up the metal road to start, then turned right up the good track towards the summit. We opted for the shortcut after that which knocks off probably about an hour to the walk up. It's the first, unmarked, but very obvious track to the left. The shortcut track has recently had some maintenance done to it and is now very good. It gradually steepens but is still easy going. After turning left at the T-intersection with the main track, it's only a few more minutes to the trig. What a beauty, and fantastic 360 degree view all around.
It took us a very leisurely 1.5 hours walk up with lots of stops on the way. An awesome peak!
