Up Te Aroha, Down Waiorongomai

After seeing Clouseau's post, we decided to do a similar route.

We started up Te Aroha at around 10am (approx), and walked up to the lookout for a short break. A family came up behind us, we took a picture for them and started up. They ended up catching us up near the summit. The track to the summit was really dry and not slippery, was quite nice. We sat up at the trig for lunch of fresh bread and hummus.

So we walked down the track marked Dog Kennel Flats, and around towards Waiorongomai.  I was pretty keen to see Waiorongomai Valley because my mum had walked it two weeks prior. This track was quite slippery in places, and overgrown, but that was the fun part.  Walked through a tunnel following the tram tracks, and then down the May Queen incline, and the track around and over Butler's incline.  This was really awesome: I love mining and logging history.

There were lots of awesome photo oppertunities, but it's a pity that I couldn't find my cameras battery pack charger... :/

We walked to the bottom, rested then started the 5km walk back to town.  Tried to hitchhike back but we didn't get anyone stoppping which was unfortunate. It wasn't until we were almost in town when we realised that we should have parked a car at Waiorongomai as well as Te Aroha, because we went with two cars. I think I'll just put that down to university brain fade...

All up: 6.5hours with breaks.

PS Thanks for the route Inspector Clouseau
