I bagged Maungatautari on the 30th of May 09, started from Hicks rd about 8.30am, headed up access-way across farm paddocks until the predator proof fence where you enter through the right hand gates leading to "Old mountain/Summit Track". Track was very wet and slippery after recent rain. Climbed steadily for about two hours until an intersection about 10 minutes from the summit.
The Rahiri Rd track turns off to the right and is very over grown and not very well marked, but has a good lookout after about an hours hard scramble over and under wind fallen trees. I think the out crop of rock is called Hook nose rock. Another hour back to the main track and then on to the summit.
After a bite to eat I carried on to Pukeatua Peak, good views south from here. Then it's mostly all down hill from here with some very steep sections ending up at Tari Road 8 hours after starting out.
Hard day out but most enjoyable
