What A Beautiful Day - Mt Ngauruhoe in Winter
« on: September 11, 2008, 02:54:37 PM »
A group of us from the ATC 2008 Snowcraft Course climbed the old girl on Saturday the 6th Sept. Brilliant conditions and a good cover of snow. Took us a couple of hours to climb the peak -we were lucky a previous group had gone through and we followed in their cut steps!
Spent a bit of time at the top taking photos , having lunch etc. Then we went across and bum slid down the slope. It took us about 5 or so minutes to go down a kilometre or so - what a buzz!!
Recommended to all.

We had ice axe & crampons, overtrou (don't recommend you spike them with the ice axe thou - it hurts!) as well as usual polyprops - extra layers etc. Should be snow course next year and may be same field trip.. http://atcsnowcraft.110mb.com/

Been up without crampons but wouldn't recommend it.
