Mt Humphries Easter 2013

Had a scenic back road trip between Hunterville and Wanganui  having just bagged Mt Mangaweka in the Ruahine ranges (see post).

The Matemateaonga track would be awesome for a family intro to the bush as its very flat though a wee bit easy for a seasoned peak bagger.  From the Kohi Saddle car park (about 13 KM past Murkott Rd) make sure you donít walk past the orange markers on your left fence line as you walk up the metal driveway.  It took 1:10Hr to arrive at Omaru hut, 1Hr to a grass clearing/old track intersection  which would be ideal for camping, 50min to the Mt Humpries track junction and 50min to the summit.  Bearing in mind we had 15kg packs in the dark to arrive and pitch tents by mid night 3Hrs in total.  Quite doable at night up to the Mt turn off due to the track being like a main road (to us at least) but is harder to spot the orange makers up the assent to the summit.  The summit is open flat land and an awesome place to camp.  Low cloud robbed us of what would have been incredible views the next day.

Had planned to complete the Puteore hut circuit but just didn't feel up for a 9Hr tramp with a long drive home so instead we had a great road trip back on the Forgotten Highway stopping off at Whangamomona for a tavern meal, purchased our passports and got them stamped and drove out via Ohura back to Hamilton.
