Walked the circuit from Waharau regional park. Disturbed a family of pigs on the way down or should i say blundered into the group and was lucky i wasnt standing between the sow and her young it was chaos.
Very fortunate with this one. An overcast day up to syme hut then climbed taranaki the next morning in brilliantly clear skies. was feeling so good that on the way down detoured around lake dive and came back through the gorges. this however was a mistake as the gorges was like spending 4 hrs on a stepping machine and couldnt walk properly for a week after.
Did this as part of a three day circuit taking in Kiwi Saddle Hut and a day and a half in the ngaroro river. not quite sure why I do the Kawekas in the summer as it was Bloody hot again. Very energy sapping
Walked Matauria ridge Mackintosh spur to studholme saddle hut then over Kaweka J on my way out. The day before it was hot (bloody hot) the next day so cold every thing was freezing. Dont you just love this place
I grew up on Belmont Flat during the Fifties and Sixties and this was our play ground before Kelson even Existed. This is a great place to lie and cloud watch on a summers day or star gaze on a crisp autumn evening. An even better place to battle the elements in a howling southerly. you havent lived until youve braced a good storm anchored by the rocks on boulder hill. This is the place that built the wonderlust for adventure and the need to know what lay beyond the next hill and ridge.
Great walk through moody Goblin Forest on an overgrown track. There is a small hut at the top that was cold in summer and would be bloody cold in winter but well worth the walk. Worth considering as a three day walk over manuoha and out to waikareiti and sandy bay hut then to waikaremoana via ruapani track.
This is a favourite of mine as it comes with a rather comfortable hut at the top with several approaches of varying difficulty that can make an overnight excursion that satisfies the soul
