1  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Urchin / Ridge between Umukarikari and Urchin Date: June 26, 2008, 10:13:30 AM
DOC have cut a track along the ridge between Umukarikari and Urchin. When I was last there a month or so ago there was still 600m at the Umukarikari end that had been marked but not yet cut.

This will make it a feasible round day trip taking in both Umukarikari and Urchin.

Care is needed going down the ridge from Umukarikari towards the bush. It is not yet marked and route finding might be an issue in fog.

DOC do intend to mark and signpost this route when the track cutting is finished, which hopefully will be before next summer.

You also want to add Otanewainuku (2791911 6361557) and Whakapounakau (2807973 6339878) as definite possibilities to the list.
4  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Ngongotaha, Mt / Mt Ngongotaha Date: June 23, 2008, 02:18:46 PM
What about Mt Ngongotaha near Rotorua. There is a road to the top but the gate usually remains firmly locked. The Ngongotaha Bush Restoration Trust in conjunction with Forest and Bird have established access to the historic Jubilee Track which goes up from a new carpark at 40 Paradise Valley Rd.

It takes about an hour and a half to get to the top and is a worthwhile trip through magnificent forest. The Trust is developing a loop track on the lower slopes of the mountain as well for those who do not wish to go all the way to the top.
