Great walk nice track easy and all year round but was cold at the top. Lots of bird life and one of the best 360 views at the top. This would be a good walk for the family to go on will take my girls back to this one when they are older. It took me 1 hour 20 mins round trip from Link Rd.

5  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Maunganui Bluff / Maunganui Bluff Date: October 03, 2013, 04:40:41 AM
Great walk I do love these walks along the coast. Very muddy track as they are working on it. There must be lots of pigs in this area pig routing and pig tracks in the mud. The local farmers cows had broken through the fence and it was like following a bullock trail. It took me 1:51 hrs and total return trip of 6.4 km.
6  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Manaia, Mt / Mt Manaia Date: October 03, 2013, 04:16:08 AM
I have walked Bream Head in the morning and was on my way over to the Kauri Coast and I bagged Mt Manaia. Great walk and great view over towards Marsden point. I attached bit of a view spoiler photo. It took me 55 min and 3.8km according to my Nike TomTom watch. Nice little walk.
7  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Bream Head / Bream Head Date: October 03, 2013, 04:06:29 AM
Great walk I love a walk next to the coast. I parked by ocean beach and up the track from the beach and onto the radar site then onto the high point of bream head nice view. It was a blustery day with showers and it was nice in the bush. I went on to Mt Lion and then back tracked to peach cove track and down the road back to the car. The walk took me 2:58 hrs and I walked about 11.3km according to my Nike TomTom watch. I don't usually take pictures but I did on this occasion which I have attached. The picture is taken from close to Mt Lion looking back at Bream Head. I then went on to walk Mt Mania two easy bags in a day.
8  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Otanewainuku / Otanewainuku Date: September 16, 2013, 01:57:40 PM
Another great walk my wife was at a photography course at Te Awamutu and I went through to bag this peak. I am impressed by the amount of bird life due to the extensive pest eradication programme. Nice big White beach and I always love a good viewing platform at the peak. A bit muddy under foot but all in all a good track. I had my Nike TomTom watch on and it recons it was 3.17 km loop and from the car park and back I did it in 33:55 min jogging most of the way. Great view from the top clear day and great views over to Tauranga and back towards Rotorua and beyond. Not quite clear enough to see the mountain.
9  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Kaitarakihi / Kaitarakihi Date: August 29, 2013, 07:09:56 AM
Great walk saw a north island robin and a little muddy under foot but I did like the last bit with the chain nice little climb always makes bagging a peak a little more special when you have something like that. Nice views back over Hauraki plains and back over Coromandel. It was a nice clear day and it took me 2:57 hours fast walking and it was about 7.9 km long according to my Nike Tomtom watch. You couldn't trail run this one to many supple jack vines across the trail to trip you up!
10  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Rainbow Mountain / Rainbow Mountain Date: August 27, 2013, 05:51:11 AM
Great walk if you are in Rotorua for the weekend on holiday. Good track great views and alot of evidence of wild pigs. Wild pigs diiging all over this track. good thermal activity and a nice view although it was very cloudy and I got a couple of seconds of viewing through clearing cloud. Interesting workers hut at the top with the usual steal mast and its workings. I jog some of the way up and all the way back down it took me 1:02 hours and it was 6.27 km according to my Nike Tomtom watch. Great walk ashame about the weather. Dry track mainly and I will be doing it again when I am back in Rotorua to get the full view I missed out on.
11  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Ngongotaha, Mt / Mt Ngongotaha Date: August 27, 2013, 05:43:40 AM
Bagged while on holiday with the family at Rotorua. Great walk up through the bush on the southern side of the mountain track very good and no view at the top except for a steal tower. It took me just under an hour it was 5.40 km at 59:05 mins I did jog some of the way up and all the way down.
12  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Pirongia, Mt / Mt Pirongia Date: April 02, 2013, 12:09:30 PM
Was on holiday at my in laws at Raglan and I was released from the kids to bag Mt Pirongia.
I followed the advice of Peak Bagging NZ and started my hike from Corcoran Road. I have a Nike +GPS sports watch and I started it from the car park.
I started at 10.26 am and I went to the summit and then on to the hut and lunch and then back down the same way. It took me 3.58 hours and the morning chorus was in full song.
It was very white and misty on the way up but started to clear on the way down. The track was dry to start with and a little dusty in places from the drought but a few showers on the way up and it started to mud over and the tree routes became very slippery.
Another great hike but will have to do it again to see the view from the top.  Also DOC signs state that it is about 6.5 km to the top but my watch says its 11km from the car park to the summit on to the hut and back which would make the kms to the hut about 5.5 so I would say the summit is a little less than 6 km.
A very good work out climbing and hiking.
13  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Te Aroha / Mt Te Aroha Date: February 07, 2013, 09:41:27 AM
I bagged Mt Karangahaka in the morning and then onto Mt Te Aroha in the afternoon. I parked at the domain and started at the usual spot. The track is pretty much straight up the mountain. I saw a Morepork eating on a rock half way up and got to the Trig by the Antennae in about 1 hour 45. I then walked down the gravel road out I do recommended this because you get some very good views. Good walk great fitness on the way up but the road out does take a little longer than going back down the way you come up. Once again I had great views from the top but it was starting to cloud over. The whole walk took me 3 hours but the walk up was about 4.5 km but the walk out down the road is longer.
14  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Karangahake / Mt Karangahake Date: February 07, 2013, 09:14:53 AM
Parked at the end of Crown Hill Road and set off up the gravel road. I went the long was at the T intersection and it was very dry and a good path which was dry all the way. The view at the Trig was top notch due to the weather being a sunny day with good visibility. It took me from car to trig and back to car 1 hour 50 mins. Good walk very recommended.
15  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Hirakimata / Mt Hobson Great BVarrier island highest peak Date: January 31, 2012, 02:56:19 PM
I left bush's beach which is located one bay south of port fiztroy. I walked towards the Kaiaraara hut and then on the track with the same name passing the kauri dams. I was dropped off on the beach at about 8.30am. I reached Mt Hobson at about 11.30 and I stopped on the way to admire a Kaka parrot stripping Nikau berries amazing sight. I left Mt Hobson and had lunch in the new Mt Heal Hut which was a great hut with a great view and then down the South Fork track and back to bushes beach I left the hut at about 12.00 and was back down at the beach ready for pick up at 2.00pm. A great walk with very good tracks very well maintaned. Good fishing and diving also lucky to be on a boat.
