Did this some time ago, but would recommend starting from the south end, which goes through a lovely stand of native bush before heading up out in the open farm land to the top. All farm land if you start at north end.

Very Misty day so no views :( But a very good day out with only one other couple on the track. Fun track with chains and ladders, and mud ++. Must visit again on a clear day. Lunch in Raglan after at a great place called The Shack. Highly recommend.

Nice day out. Looked in on the Centre of North Island and also the Bog Inn Hut.
4  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Dome Summit / Dome Date: December 31, 2012, 03:25:55 PM
30th Dec 2012 Day started very wet and we were prepared for a wet walk up to the Dome Summit. By the time we got to the start by the Dome Cafe there was just a light drizzle. The track up to the look out is very well formed with lots of steps with a number of trees named by the Forest and Bird Society, which was nice. Took us just over 25 mins to get to the look out which was very close to the time on the sign board which stated 1 hour return. From the look out the DOC sign warns of track being of tramping grade and require moderate fitness. This was also accurate. The track was easy to follow, but had a lot of roots to negotiate and because of the weather quite slippery in places. No view from the trig as we were in the clouds, but by the time we got back to the lookout it had lifted and we had a good view of the summit and down the valley.
We will come back next time to go further along this track to check out the Kauri grove.
Good morning out.
