Flew out to Great Barrier Island for a long weekend of walking. This was the main target which we attempted shortly after landing on the island. We used the Palmers Track approach. Windy Canyon was an enjoyable spot along the way. Plenty of views along the way also. As you near the summit there is a board walk and a lot of steps. A lovely forest section exists as you make the final push to the summit. Really pleased to make the top on such a fine day. Well worth the walk!
2  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Tamahunga, Mt / Mt Tamahunga Date: February 28, 2017, 08:10:53 AM
I decided to head out for hike today. Once on the trail, the pull of the summit of Mt Tamahunga was strong. I have been wanting to bag this peak for an age. I made excellent time, coming in from the Matakana Valley Road end. Blitzed the suggested time at the start of the trail. Fresh legs are good like that. I think I will not be able to maintain this pass through out the day however. Nice to finally bag this peak!
3  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Pinnacles, The / The Pinnacles Date: February 28, 2017, 08:00:02 AM
Spent the long weekend camping in the Kauaeranga valley. We did a series of shorter walks yesterday. But today was the main event, an epic hike up the Pinnacles. Great views from up here today. Loved it.

Joined a group of geocachers for a hike up to the summit. We took the McKenzie Bay Road around the coast and then up to the summit. Where we had a lunch. A highlight was the trip through the lava caves. We took the summit track back down to the Wharf.
5  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / William, Mt / Mt William Bagged Date: February 28, 2017, 07:50:11 AM
I've been meaning to get to this one for the longest time now. Today was the day. Great weather for it. Many local muggles agreed as the car-park was full. After collecting My Dad, with the Future Peak Bagger in tow, we headed for the McMillian trailhead. We figured a bush walk would be more enhancing than countryside. The Future Finder wasn't really up to the steep bits, so we took turns piggy-backing him up (and then down) the mount. A two hour round trip in the end with an elevation gain of 315m. Not to shabby with a six year old on your back
6  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Zion, Mt / Mt Zion, out and about around Karekare. Date: January 10, 2015, 03:18:08 PM
Out and about Karekare this afternoon for a hike, geocaching and to bag this peak. I came up the Hill track before taking the Ridge track to the summit and a little further. I then returned the Hill track to make my way down to the beach. I took a small detour to bush bash to the top of a waterfall just off the track. I made my way back to the car along the beach following the Hillary trail for much of it. All in all it was a four and a half hour adventure.

I haven't bagged a peak in a while so convinced a couple of friends that a hike was in order. Parked up near the Dam and had a comfortable walk to the summit and back. Splendid views up here today!

Came up the Wairake track to bag some geocaches and to finally take the plunge and officially start peak-bagging. Great day for it today--early on we could even make out Mt Taranaki. The views in any which direction were super! Great time up the top exploring some of the lesser peaks as well.
