1  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Pureora, Mt / Mt Pureora, Link track Date: August 01, 2011, 05:04:16 PM
Quick jaunt up this one on the way home from Waiouru. First some 15 km drive on gravel road to get to the link track carpark. Easy walk up, it's all gravel and boardwalk. 33 min up, 10 minutes on the summit, 20 min jog back down. Fantastic day, 360 degree views, just awesome. I heard a lot of bird life chirping all around the summit too, something I don't hear very often. It was windstill, just before sunset, and cold, maybe that helps.
2  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Baldy, Mt / Mt Baldy Date: April 26, 2011, 08:50:34 AM
Finish off my Easter weekend trip with a good hard hike.
About 1hr15 to the hut following the steeper spur climb. Half way up after the side track north the track gets a bit rougher. Another 15 minutes from the hut to Mt Baldy itself, and the track is quite rough and tricky.  The top was clouded in, so no views.  Some views over the hauraki plains and the western bay of plenty at different times of the trip.
Descent from the summit to Tauhu Track Crossing about one hour. (Jogging where possible)
Then an awesome run down to the carpark, perfect smooth downhill gradient for trail running, 34 minutes for the Tauhu track. (2 hours signposted from the top :-)
Just over 3 hours total. Pushing it!
3  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Maunganui, Mt / Mt Maunganui Date: April 26, 2011, 08:30:09 AM
20 minutes up, 18 minutes down including around the summit. (Jogging)
Great views from here, nice start to the day.
4  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Ngongotaha, Mt / Ngongotaha Date: April 26, 2011, 08:23:39 AM
I was not sure where this track was going to be, but it does indeed start at the carpark as indicated.
There is a loop track going half way up, but it is not clear where the track to the summit is. The loop track gets to a crossing with a solid wooden bench, from there the track up the spur goes to the summit.
I went straight through this crossing on the way down along the spur, saving some time.
Eventually it took some 50 mins to get up, 20 minutes down (jogging)
Track conditions excellent, just a few mud pools near the top, but mostly groomed track for the loop walk, and nice bush trail for the rest.
5  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Otanewainuku / Otanewainuku Date: April 26, 2011, 07:58:31 AM
Real kiwi heartland around here. And it is a Kiwi recovery area as well.
Beautiful bits of native bush, and you get rewarded with a Humongous Kahikatea on the loop track.
Worth doing the loop walk on the other side of the road as well, some massive Rata trees there.
Tracks very good, very little mud, mostly leaves on the ground.
Up 25 min, down 18 min, rata loop track 15 min (jogging)
6  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Karangahake / Karangahake Date: April 26, 2011, 07:49:06 AM
Quick summit on the way to Tauranga for the weekend.
About 50 minutes up via shortcut, 45 down via normal tracks.
Just a bit fogged up on top. Just a few mud pools, otherwise tracks are good.
7  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / William, Mt / Mt. William Date: April 26, 2011, 02:36:42 AM
Good friday, getting out of auckland for easter. At the same time as everyone else, it took 1hr15 to drive to the SH2 turnoff from the city. So I was happy to get out of the car for a walk.

Up 35 min, down 20 min
Overcast, only some views over the Bombays and Waikato
Track in good condition, little mud.
Some friendly stock in the upper paddock, and thousands of crickets at the summit.
8  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Kohukohunui / Kohukohunui Date: April 16, 2011, 04:47:50 AM
I took the longer route, starting from the Whaharau Camp Ground.
Up Whaharau ridge track, down and up Mangatangi Ridge track, past the shelter with water in the valley. Then up to Kohukohunui. I ran out of water just at the summit so was preparing myseld for a slow dehydrated tamp back. Thankfully there is a hut with water tust north of the summit, allowing me to jog back most of the way along Kokukohunui track and back down Whaharau Ridge Track. Round trip about 4 hours 15 for me.
9  North Island Trip Reports and Comments / Ruapehu, Mt / Party at the top! Date: July 06, 2010, 05:13:03 AM
To celebrate a mate's 60st birthday with a champagne at the (Dome) summit.
Ian walked up in Kilt, Smoking jacket, bow tie and top hat.

Great day, cloud at about 2000 meters, but with a south-westerly it never touched the Whakapapa ski area. Summit clear all day.
All the ski fields appearded to be open, but it was not very busy on the slopes.
We walked all the way from the carpark. About 4 hours up, 3 hours down to accomodate for varied skill and fitness levels.  It was VERY cold at the top, probably -10 deg and another -10 wind chill factor in the 40 kph gusts. The Dome shelter was barely recognisable and not accessible as it had turned into a pile of ice.  Great views of the lake and the summit plateau.  Busy up there too, I spotted 4 other parties, some 12 people as well as our group of 8.  Awesome day

Crampons essential!

Been there 4 times now.
Possible the least like a 'Peak', no views from there, it feels like a bit of a rise from the surrounding bush.
It is however heartland waitakeres, you need to do a decent walk to get there.
