This was awesome. The weather was a bit marginal, but we went with a group so trusted the guide. In case you are wondering, it is worth going with a guided group. You learn more and are infinitely safer. It is surprisingly easy to get lost on the way down.

This peak is very badly eroded, and a lot of the time you are slip-sliding along scree slopes. There are a couple of very narrow bits that are quite scary unless you're used to that kind of thing. It's definitely Medium/Hard. We spent more time sliding on our arses than we did on Ngauruhoe.

About 50 minutes to get to the top. This peak seems a favourite with wiry local ladies - maybe the mountain has some fertility aspect? One we met had reached the top in 32 minutes. When we got back to the car park we felt we hadn't quite earned our fish and chips, so we went down the hill to find the start of the Mt Aubrey track, which we found by going down Bay View Place. The cove at the bottom is delightful, with views of the sea, but not Marsden Point refinery. Mt Aubrey track isn't hard and will bring you out a couple of hundred metres from The Deck cafe, where the fish and chips are excellent.
+1 for Cafe Eutopia in Kaiwaka too!
